Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to embark on a significant three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir starting from February 5. The visit aims to conduct a thorough security assessment, review developmental projects, and engage with political stakeholders. This visit has garnered varied responses from leaders, reflecting a mix of optimism, expectations, and political concerns.
The itinerary is expected to feature crucial meetings with security agencies and administrative officials to evaluate the region’s law and order situation and the status of ongoing governance and infrastructure projects. BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa welcomed the Home Minister’s visit, highlighting its importance as a signal of the Centre’s dedication to Jammu and Kashmir. He emphasized that such visits boost the morale of security forces and underscore the government’s unwavering stance against terrorism and instability.
In response to the news, PDP MLA Syed Muntazir Mehdi characterized the visit as routine but stressed the necessity of political outreach. While acknowledging the significance of security and administrative reviews, Mehdi underscored that sustained stability in Jammu and Kashmir hinges on restoring political rights and engaging with stakeholders. Another PDP MLA, Waheed Para, while appreciating the visit, expressed concerns about the increasing incidents of alleged hate crimes against individuals from Jammu and Kashmir, particularly students in various states. Para urged the government to establish mechanisms ensuring their safety.
JKNC MLA Hasnain Masoodi expressed optimism that the visit would address political issues, specifically the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, a promise made post the region’s reorganization in 2019. Officials highlighted the visit’s timeliness as the government maintains its focus on security, development, and political involvement in the Union Territory.
