Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu has announced the redevelopment of the Amritsar railway station into a world-class facility, costing Rs 402 crore. The plan aims to modernize the station, making it more passenger-friendly and equipped for future needs. Additionally, Rs 100 crore has been allocated for the reconstruction and expansion of five more platforms.
The redevelopment project, appreciated by Ravneet Singh, is a blend of modern infrastructure and Punjab’s cultural heritage. The comprehensive master plan includes major yard remodelling and augmentation works to meet future passenger and operational demands. The expansion will involve adding five new platforms and passenger loop lines to enhance train handling capacity and reduce congestion.
To support advanced rail operations, a new Vande Bharat maintenance shed will be established in Amritsar, enhancing the state’s railway infrastructure and operational efficiency. The station buildings are set to become architectural landmarks, with a proposed G+10 station building on the northern side and a G+3 building on the southern side. These structures will offer improved passenger amenities, circulation, and commercial spaces, fostering local economic growth and job creation.
Passenger convenience remains a top priority in the redevelopment vision, with plans for two new subways connecting the station’s northern and southern sides for safe and efficient platform access. The project also includes the installation of modern lifts and escalators to enhance accessibility for various passenger groups, such as seniors, differently-abled individuals, women, and children.
External developments will encompass upgraded parking facilities, improved traffic systems, and covered drop-off zones directly linked to the station buildings. The Amrit Bharat Express, flagged off by the Union minister, signifies a significant step in bolstering rail connectivity between northern and eastern India, benefiting a wide range of travelers, including workers, students, tourists, and pilgrims.
