Amaravati, Aug 9 (IANS) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday announced Rs 20 lakh assistance for the family of medico K. Priyanka, who was run over by a car driven by a youth under the influence of alcohol at a mall in Rajamahendravaram on August 3.

The Chief Minister expressed deep anguish over the death of the medico, who breathed her last at a private hospital in Hyderabad.

Describing the death of the young medical student as deeply distressing, the Chief Minister said it was particularly painful to see a promising young life, with a bright future ahead, cut short in such a tragic manner.

Priyanka received serious injuries when a car driven by the youngsters hit her at a mall in Rajamahendravaram. She was initially treated in the city hospital and was later shifted to Hyderabad by her family members for better medical care.

The Chief Minister reviewed the incident with district officials and spoke to the District Collector and Superintendent of Police to take stock of the case.

The SP informed the Chief Minister that the accused persons responsible for the incident had already been arrested.

Expressing concern over the loss of an innocent life due to negligence, Chandrababu Naidu directed the authorities to ensure that the accused face stringent legal action under appropriate sections of law.

The Chief Minister also directed the officials to extend Rs 20 lakh in financial assistance to Priyanka’s bereaved family. He assured the family of the government’s continued support and directed the authorities to provide all possible assistance to them during this difficult time.

Expressing his condolences to Priyanka’s family, the Chief Minister said the loss of a young medical student was an irreparable tragedy and stressed that those responsible must face the consequences of their actions.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan said that the death of Dr Priyanka, who was critically injured after being struck by a car driven recklessly by drunk youths in Rajamahendravaram, is deeply distressing. It is heartbreaking that she passed away so prematurely, cutting short a future where she was poised to serve many as a doctor, he said.

The Deputy CM said the coalition government will take steps to ensure that the accused, whose reckless driving claimed a precious life, face severe punishment. He conveyed deepest condolences to her family members.

Priyanka, a first-year postgraduate medical student, was pronounced dead by doctors at KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad, on Sunday.

A native of Telangana’s Jogulamba Gadwal district, she was pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD) course at the GSL Medical College in Rajamahendravaram in East Godavari district.

Dr Priyanka, 28, was coming out of the mall with her friend Umesh on a scooty on the night of August 3 when a speeding car rammed into the two-wheeler.

She sustained grievous injuries and was admitted to a local hospital and later shifted to Hyderabad. She had been treated on a ventilator. Doctors had already declared her brain-dead.

After the postmortem examination, the medico’s body will be shifted to Eklaspur village in Gadwal district for last rites.

Earlier in the day, police announced that a case of attempt to commit culpable homicide has been registered against Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards, who rammed their car into the two-wheeler.
