Andhra Pradesh has emerged as a frontrunner in mangrove restoration among Indian states, securing the second position nationwide under the MISHTI scheme by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change. The state’s Forest department highlighted its commitment to restoring coastal ecosystems and conserving biodiversity through extensive mangrove development as part of the Great Greenwall of Andhra Pradesh initiative.

In the fiscal year 2025-26, Andhra Pradesh successfully developed 2,047.70 hectares of mangrove plantations, investing a total of Rs 18.04 crore in coastal ecosystem restoration. The adoption of the innovative Fish Bone Technique has facilitated improved tidal water circulation, higher mangrove survival rates, and enhanced long-term ecological resilience.

Looking ahead to 2026–27, the state aims to restore 1,618 hectares of mangrove ecosystems across Andhra Pradesh. Through a science-based approach to restoration, sustainable coastal management, and ongoing conservation endeavors, Andhra Pradesh is working towards building resilient coastlines, safeguarding biodiversity, and enhancing the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Deputy Chief Minister and State Forest Minister, Pawan Kalyan, expressed pride in Andhra Pradesh’s achievement in securing the second position in India under the MISHTI scheme. He commended the Forest Department for its dedication and efforts in restoring over 2,047 hectares of mangroves, implementing innovative conservation practices, and focusing on coastal ecosystem protection.

In his message on the International Day for the conservation of mangrove ecosystems, the Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the crucial role of mangroves in protecting coastal areas from natural disasters, supporting marine biodiversity, and mitigating climate change impacts. He underscored the state government’s commitment to mangrove conservation through initiatives like the Great Green Wall of Andhra Pradesh, aiming to restore and develop thousands of acres of mangroves to enhance the state’s resilience against climate change.
