Former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff is set to become the head coach of Sydney Thunder for the upcoming Big Bash League season. The Thunder had been seeking a replacement for Trevor Bayliss, who left after a five-year stint due to inconsistent team performance. Bayliss led the team to the BBL final in the 2024-25 season but also saw them finish at the bottom in the 2023-24 and 2025-26 seasons.
Flintoff has emerged as the top choice for the coaching role, as reported by Code Sports, and is expected to be officially appointed by the franchise soon. This would be Flintoff’s first major coaching role with an overseas franchise. He has recently been involved with the England Lions setup and was part of the coaching staff during their tour of Australia alongside the Ashes series.
Having previously coached the Northern Superchargers in The Hundred league for two seasons, Flintoff brings valuable experience to the role. He also has playing experience in Australian domestic T20 cricket, having represented Brisbane Heat in the 2014-15 BBL season, which marked the end of his professional playing career.
If the appointment goes ahead as planned, Flintoff may face an immediate challenge in dealing with the team’s captaincy situation. David Warner, the veteran opener and current Thunder captain, is facing scrutiny due to a recent drink-driving charge. Warner is expected to plead guilty when the case returns to court on June 24.
