Since 2018, Anukul Roy, a member of the Indian team that won the Men’s U19 World Cup, has been a bench player in the IPL, with only 12 appearances, mainly for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). However, following an impressive domestic season for Jharkhand, Roy is optimistic about securing a regular spot in KKR’s line-up in 2026.
Roy’s outstanding performance in the 2025/26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored 303 runs and took 18 wickets, has garnered attention. His all-round skills were highlighted as he was named Player of the Tournament, leading Jharkhand to their maiden SMAT title.
Having primarily been seen as a spin-bowling option at KKR, Roy’s batting prowess has now come into focus, leading to discussions with the team’s head coach on enhancing his batting versatility. Roy’s success in the SMAT was attributed to being pushed up the batting order, allowing him more opportunities to impact matches.
Roy credits his consistent application and adaptability in different batting positions for his success, emphasizing the importance of playing according to the team’s situation. Learning from experienced spinners like Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy during net sessions has been crucial for Roy’s development in spin bowling.
Transitioning swiftly from the Ranji Trophy to the SMAT, Roy found the adjustment seamless, thanks to a strong foundation. With a host of young talents from Jharkhand making their mark in IPL and international cricket, Roy, at 27, is determined to make a mark in IPL 2026 to boost his chances of national team selection.
Roy’s immediate goal is to contribute effectively to KKR’s success and help them secure a playoff spot swiftly. Despite waiting for his opportunity to shine, Roy remains focused on making the most of his chances and aims to make a significant impact in IPL 2026, potentially paving the way for higher honors.
