The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the rape and murder case of a 12-year-old girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district, has arrested Kabir Molla, the fourth person detained in connection with the incident. Kabir, who had been on the run since the crime occurred, was apprehended in Basirhat, North 24 Parganas district. Pravas Mondal, the first arrestee, was killed in a confrontation while attempting to flee after seizing a police officer’s rifle.
Ananda Sardar and Dibakar Sardar, the other two suspects, are currently in police custody, with Ananda being the main accused and alleged mastermind. Kabir is scheduled to appear in a South 24 Parganas district court, where the prosecution will request his remand. Chief Minister Subhendu Adhikari visited Baruipur and emphasized a ‘zero tolerance’ approach by the police and administration in handling the case.
The police have initiated an inquiry into the disturbances and violence instigated by a group following the discovery of the girl’s body. The Chief Minister vowed to hold those responsible accountable, with 20 individuals already arrested for their involvement in attacking law enforcement and damaging vehicles. The recovery of the girl’s body had sparked tension in the area, leading to the tragic lynching of an innocent 26-year-old man, Indrajit Tanti, as confirmed by the Chief Minister.
