Artisans in Agra expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for showcasing their ‘Pietra Dura’ artworks to the Governor-General of Australia. The elegant marble inlay work box, featuring intricate semi-precious stones embedded into marble, was presented during PM Modi’s recent visit to Australia.
President of the Khuddam-e-Roza committee, Haji Tahir Uddin Tahar, highlighted the significance of this art form, stating that it is a source of pride for them. The craftsmanship, known as ‘Pietra Dura’ or marble inlay, has been a traditional business for generations in Agra.
The artisans, while acknowledging a recent decline in demand, expressed optimism about increased opportunities following the international recognition. Shamsuddin, one of the artisans, emphasized the need for consistent work to improve their earnings, aiming for a daily income of Rs 1,000 compared to the current Rs 500-600.
Prime Minister Modi also gifted Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese a diverse collection symbolizing the blend of culture and innovation. The gifts ranged from a ‘Colonial Cousins’ Album vinyl record to a hand-carved wooden elephant representing Rajasthan’s unique lattice work.
