Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein praised state-run NHPC for completing Unit 4 (250 MW) of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, the largest in India. With this addition, the project’s total operational capacity has now reached 1,000 MW. Mein hailed this achievement as a significant step towards clean and sustainable energy generation in the country.
Describing the milestone as a major accomplishment, Mein expressed gratitude to all involved in the project for their dedication and hard work. He emphasized the importance of such projects in India’s journey towards self-reliant energy production. The Deputy Chief Minister also expressed optimism that the remaining units of the project would be commissioned as planned by the end of 2026.
Mein highlighted the transformative impact of the hydroelectric project on progress and development in the region. The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, situated on the Subansiri River, is expected to be fully operational by December 2026. Currently, four out of the eight units are already functioning, contributing to the project’s overall capacity.
Officials noted that NHPC’s commercial operation of Unit 4, effective from May 8, has boosted the project’s operational capacity to 1,000 MW. The completion of the entire 2,000 MW project is anticipated to significantly increase electricity availability in the Northeastern region and support India’s clean energy objectives. Additionally, the project aims to promote eco-tourism, adventure activities, cultural experiences, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.
