Days before heading to Raipur for the Khelo India Tribal Games, Arunachal weightlifter Anai Wangsu faced a health crisis due to her chronic gastric problems. Despite being hospitalized and needing intravenous fluids, she managed to secure a gold medal in Chhattisgarh.
Struggling with gastric issues since 2019, Anai’s health challenges often lead to weakness and fatigue, posing a significant hurdle in a demanding sport like weightlifting. However, undeterred by setbacks, she swiftly returned to training post-discharge, determined to alter the course of her career.
Anai Wangsu, aged 21, clinched the women’s 58kg gold in Raipur, marking a significant milestone in her career. Previously, she had won bronze and silver medals in various competitions but had always fallen short of the elusive gold, making this victory particularly special for her and her family.
Belonging to the Wangcho tribe, Anai’s journey in weightlifting was inspired by her brother’s aspirations and support. Introduced to the sport through trials at a Sports Authority of India center, Anai gradually developed a passion for weightlifting, eventually excelling and earning a spot for advanced training in Lucknow.
Despite facing health setbacks exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Anai’s determination and hard work paid off with the recent gold medal win, instilling in her a renewed sense of confidence and validation for her relentless efforts.
