Assam celebrates the addition of four new Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged treasures, including Bihu Pepa, Karbi Anglong Handloom, Bah Silpa (Assamese Bamboo Craft), and Deori Handloom Products. These products now have legal protection, recognizing their cultural significance and unique ties to Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma views this as a crucial step in conserving the state’s heritage and boosting economic opportunities for artisans.
The GI certification ensures that these traditional products maintain their authenticity and aids in preventing misuse of their names. Chief Minister Sarma emphasizes the importance of fair value for genuine producers and the promotion of only authentic items in the market. This recognition comes at a time when Assam’s heritage products are gaining prominence nationally and internationally.
The newly recognized products, such as Bihu Pepa and Karbi Anglong Handloom, represent various aspects of Assam’s rich cultural tapestry. These products, deeply rooted in the state’s traditions, not only showcase craftsmanship but also contribute to rural livelihoods. The GI tags are expected to enhance market access, branding, and export potential, further supporting the state’s economic growth.
