Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the installation of the first border pillar between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh as a significant achievement, ending decades of uncertainty over the inter-state boundary. The border pillar was placed in Arunachal Pradesh’s Pakke Kesang district following the Namsai Declaration, signifying a major step towards resolution through dialogue and cooperation. Sarma emphasized the importance of this event, highlighting the cooperation and clarity it brings to the border regions, ensuring lasting peace and administrative certainty.

The Chief Minister expressed that the border pillar installation signifies a new era of cooperation and confidence between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, resolving long-standing disputes that had hindered development and service delivery in border areas. The Namsai Declaration, endorsed by both states in the presence of the Union Home Ministry, outlines a framework for a people-centric resolution, prioritizing historical records and the welfare of local communities. Sarma credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting cooperative federalism and unity among northeastern states, fostering a cohesive regional approach.

Sarma also recognized Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s guidance in steering the resolution process and thanked Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu for his cooperation. The Chief Minister emphasized that clear and settled boundaries will facilitate accelerated development, improved law and order, and enhanced coordination between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Assam’s commitment to resolving inter-state issues through dialogue-driven governance sets an example for the Northeast region, aiming for peaceful coexistence and progress.

The Namsai Declaration, a result of extensive consultations between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, represents a significant milestone in resolving one of the oldest inter-state boundary disputes in the Northeast. By establishing mutually agreed principles for demarcation based on historical records and ground realities, the declaration focuses on ensuring peace, administrative clarity, and development in border areas. The agreement aims to provide a structured roadmap for resolving contested stretches, benefiting border residents and fostering unhindered development in previously uncertain regions.
