The Assam Assembly approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, which will now undergo review by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya before being sent for President Droupadi Murmu’s approval. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the legislation as a significant milestone and thanked the Assembly members for their support. Sarma mentioned that the Bill’s implementation in Assam would occur after receiving the President’s assent.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the Bill would be forwarded to the Governor and then to the President for final approval. He emphasized that the law would be enforced in Assam once it receives the necessary presidential assent. Sarma also noted that specific rules related to the legislation’s execution would need formal notification post the President’s approval.
Sarma outlined that after presidential approval, the administrative and legal processes for implementation might span between three to six months. The proposed legislation aims to establish a unified civil framework concerning marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession, and live-in relationships, irrespective of religion. Additionally, it includes provisions such as banning polygamy and mandating the registration of live-in relationships.
The UCC has been advocated by the BJP-led Assam government to promote equality and social justice. However, opposition parties and various organizations have raised concerns regarding certain provisions and exemptions in the Bill.
