Assam BJP legislator, Manab Deka, highlighted that the recent devastating floods in Assam were caused by exceptionally high rainfall rather than typical riverine flooding. Deka noted that areas not historically prone to floods were severely impacted, with rainfall levels soaring up to 400-500% above normal, leading to unexpected inundation in supposedly safe zones.
He expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and extensive property damage due to the calamity. Deka commended the unity displayed by the people of Assam in supporting flood victims through relief activities and humanitarian aid efforts during the crisis.
Addressing the controversy surrounding Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s comments on a student protest, Deka emphasized the importance of peaceful dissent in a democracy while advocating for responsible conduct in public demonstrations. He condemned the use of abusive language in democratic discourse, especially towards political figures.
Regarding the formation of a high-powered task force for examination reforms led by Nandan Nilekani, Deka praised the decision, citing Nilekani’s expertise in digital infrastructure development. He believed that Nilekani’s leadership could bring about positive changes to the examination system, making it more transparent, efficient, and student-friendly. Deka also supported stricter legal measures against exam malpractice to uphold the credibility of competitive exams nationwide.
