Assam is expected to face widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall in the coming days, as per the India Meteorological Department’s warnings for various districts in the state. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has issued a district-wise weather forecast indicating that parts of Assam will likely experience thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy to very heavy rainfall from May 20 to May 25. Western Assam districts like Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, and others are anticipated to witness thunderstorms with lightning and heavy rain starting from May 21, with gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph in some areas.
In central Assam, including districts such as Nagaon, Hojai, and Morigaon, scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected during the week. Additionally, parts of Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong may see thunderstorms with lightning at isolated spots. The upper Assam districts like Lakhimpur, Dibrugarh, and Jorhat are likely to experience intensified rain activity, with heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds between May 22 and May 24 in isolated places. Southern Assam districts, including Cachar and Hailakandi, may also witness thunderstorms with lightning at isolated spots during the forecast period.
The India Meteorological Department has cautioned the public to stay vigilant during thunderstorm activity and avoid seeking shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning strikes. Authorities have advised district administrations to be prepared for potential localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions due to heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Recent reports from southern Assam highlighted heavy waterlogging and urban flooding following moderate downpours.
