The Assam Cabinet has made a significant decision to enhance identity verification and prevent illegal immigrants from acquiring Aadhaar cards. Individuals above 18 years old will no longer have routine Aadhaar enrolment. Instead, they will undergo a stricter scrutiny process for approval. Children below 18 will continue with the current enrolment process.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the new measures aim to prevent misuse of Aadhaar by illegal immigrants. Applications for adults will now undergo detailed verification, with the final decision resting with the government. The move is not to obstruct genuine citizens but to ensure a secure verification system.
Special provisions have been made for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Tea Garden communities, allowing them to enrol under the existing process until March 2027. The state government’s decision is part of broader efforts to strengthen documentation systems and prevent fraudulent acquisition of identity documents by illegal immigrants.
The revised system will subject every adult application to a case-by-case enhanced verification process. This approach is expected to elevate scrutiny standards, minimize misuse opportunities, and guarantee that Aadhaar cards are issued only after thorough verification of the applicant’s credentials and eligibility.
