Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed a Rs 150 crore flood mitigation initiative for Jorabat under the proposed Guwahati Ring Road. The project aims to address the persistent flash floods that disrupt life in this crucial gateway to the state. Sarma emphasized the necessity for sustainable engineering solutions over temporary relief measures, especially after the recent flash flood incident that paralyzed traffic and submerged localities in Jorabat.

The Detailed Project Report for the Guwahati Ring Road has allocated the entire Rs 150 crore specifically for flood control measures in Jorabat, as disclosed by the Chief Minister during the Budget Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Consultants working on the project are currently developing technical plans for the proposed works and have been instructed to seek approval from IIT Guwahati to ensure the design’s quality and efficacy. Sarma expressed optimism that once construction commences, the flood mitigation aspect of the Ring Road project will notably reduce the risk of flash floods in the region.

Furthermore, Sarma highlighted the mounting traffic congestion issue in Jorabat due to its location on the Assam-Meghalaya border and the escalating daily traffic flow. To alleviate pressure on the existing route, the Chief Minister unveiled plans to expand the Digaru-Narangi road into a four-lane highway. This enhanced road network will offer an alternative route for vehicles traveling from Jagiroad and adjacent areas to Guwahati, thereby alleviating congestion at Jorabat. Sarma also urged legislators from Dimoria and Dispur Assembly constituencies to support the land acquisition and other necessities for the road expansion project.

These announcements are part of the broader urban infrastructure enhancement strategy in the Guwahati metropolitan region by the Assam government. The strategy focuses on integrated transport planning, improved drainage systems, and climate-resilient infrastructure to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events and ensure seamless connectivity.
