Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a “zero tolerance” stance against cattle theft, smuggling, and illegal beef trade in the state. Since January this year, 856 individuals have been arrested, and 4,355 cattle have been recovered by the police. Sarma emphasized the need for vigilance to prevent illegal cattle activities ahead of an upcoming festival.
According to the Chief Minister, Assam Police have dealt with 425 cases of cattle theft and smuggling from January 1 to May 19 this year. The crackdown also led to the recovery of 2,980+ kg of beef and 4,355 cattle associated with theft and illegal transportation networks in various districts. The state government has ramped up surveillance to combat cross-border cattle smuggling and theft, especially in districts bordering neighboring states and international boundaries.
Law enforcement agencies are intensifying monitoring efforts across Assam to curb illegal cattle transportation and slaughter activities during the festive season. The government reiterates its commitment to taking strict action against organized cattle smuggling syndicates and individuals engaged in illegal cattle trade. Sarma has emphasized the enforcement of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act to prevent illegal cattle transportation effectively.
Security personnel are conducting rigorous vehicle checks and interstate border surveillance to dismantle smuggling networks and maintain law and order during the festive period. The state remains vigilant to ensure compliance with existing laws and prevent illegal cattle activities.
