Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to invest in top-notch sports facilities to support young talent and foster a conducive environment for athletes to compete nationally and internationally. The state is actively constructing modern sports infrastructure to provide promising athletes with the necessary resources and exposure to enhance their skills. Sarma emphasized the importance of ensuring that Assam’s sports talents have access to world-class facilities by establishing state-of-the-art sports amenities throughout the region.
The Chief Minister announced the inauguration of the Lovlina Borgohain Sports Arena in Lakhimpur, named after the Olympic bronze medalist and boxing champion Lovlina Borgohain. This facility is envisioned to become a central location for training, grassroots development, and talent identification in Upper Assam, aiming to inspire future champions. Sarma outlined the government’s strategy to decentralize sports infrastructure, enabling athletes from rural and semi-urban areas to access quality training facilities without relocating to major cities.
Investments in sports infrastructure in Assam are accompanied by comprehensive support systems, including coaching, scholarships, financial aid, and international exposure opportunities for athletes. The state’s sports policy prioritizes disciplines where Assamese athletes have demonstrated exceptional potential, such as boxing, football, athletics, and archery. Sarma emphasized that facilities named after sports icons not only serve as training centers but also symbolize aspirations for young athletes, instilling the belief that they too can achieve global success.
The Lovlina Borgohain Sports Arena is expected to play a pivotal role in identifying and nurturing talent from Lakhimpur and neighboring districts, contributing to Assam’s sporting accomplishments on a national scale. Sarma reiterated the government’s dedication to sports development as a means of investing in youth empowerment, health, and national pride, positioning Assam as a prominent sports hub in the Northeast region.
