Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the government’s emphasis on enhancing rural infrastructure to boost economic growth and create opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses. Sarma described rural areas as the new drivers of progress in Assam, propelled by the emergence of new entrepreneurs, MSMEs, and increased job prospects. The state has significantly augmented investments in rural infrastructure, particularly through the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF).
To sustain the burgeoning growth in rural regions, Sarma stressed the importance of investing in core infrastructure. The government has allocated over Rs 2,100 crore under RIDF to bolster essential facilities in rural areas. These investments aim to bridge the rural-urban gap by enhancing connectivity, public services, and economic infrastructure in villages and semi-urban zones.
The funds from RIDF have been utilized for various projects including road construction, bridges, irrigation systems, and other crucial infrastructure supporting agriculture, local industries, and rural livelihoods. This strategic initiative forms part of a broader plan to boost grassroots economic activities and enable rural communities to actively participate in Assam’s development journey.
The state government believes that enhancing rural infrastructure will not only facilitate smoother transportation of goods and people but also create a conducive environment for businesses, agricultural productivity, and local entrepreneurship to thrive. Strengthening rural infrastructure is seen as a pivotal step in narrowing the development disparity between rural and urban areas, fostering employment generation, and enhancing the overall quality of life for residents.
Operated by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the RIDF offers financial assistance to states for constructing critical rural infrastructure such as roads, bridges, irrigation projects, and social sector amenities.
