Karnataka’s Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, K.H. Muniyappa, expressed worries about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, citing concerns about its misuse causing confusion and suspicion nationwide. Muniyappa, in a meeting led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, discussed issues related to the SIR exercise, focusing on preventing irregularities and misuse. He emphasized the importance of responsible handling of voter list revisions by political parties to protect citizens’ voting rights.
The Minister clarified that while he and the Congress party support the revision of voter lists, they are troubled by the selective misuse of the process, leading to suspicions and confusion among the public. Muniyappa highlighted the need to safeguard votes in the interest of citizens and voters, underscoring the significance of democracy and fair electoral practices. Referring to allegations made by former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the deletion of lakhs of names from voter rolls, Muniyappa stressed the detrimental impact of money and muscle power on elections.
Muniyappa also commented on the political awareness of people in Kerala, noting their vigilance and consciousness. He emphasized the importance of upholding democratic principles and ensuring that elections are free from undue influence. Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for caution during the SIR process to prevent any alleged manipulations witnessed in West Bengal.
