Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the significant improvement in the state’s law and order, attributing the shift from violence to peace post-2022 to the joint efforts of the BJP-led government at the Centre and in the state. He noted that Assam, previously plagued by insurgency and instability, saw a remarkable change after decades of conflict under the Congress rule. Sarma highlighted the withdrawal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) from most districts since 2022 as a pivotal moment in the state’s history.
The Chief Minister criticized past Congress administrations for their alleged weak governance, which he claimed allowed insurgency to thrive, leading to fear and underdevelopment in Assam. He emphasized the heavy toll borne by the people during this tumultuous period, with disruptions to daily life and adverse impacts on economic growth. Sarma credited the current BJP-led governments for their focus on peace, achieved through a combination of robust security measures, dialogue with insurgent groups, and development-oriented governance.
Sarma underscored that the removal of AFSPA from nearly all districts reflects the restoration of normalcy and a growing trust in the administration among the public. This transition, according to him, signifies a new era for Assam characterized by peace, stability, and progress. The Chief Minister highlighted how this transformation has attracted investments, enhanced tourism, and elevated the quality of life for residents, positioning Assam as a pivotal state in the Northeast’s development narrative.
