Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a significant rise in registered Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the state, emphasizing their crucial role in creating jobs and driving economic progress. Currently, Assam boasts 17.29 lakh registered MSMEs operating in various sectors, with plans for further expansion to enhance the business environment.
Sarma expressed satisfaction with the substantial increase in registered MSMEs over recent years, underscoring the government’s commitment to fostering more enterprises. He emphasized that each new business venture contributes to job creation, thereby fortifying the state’s economy and promoting stability.
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of MSMEs in sectors like manufacturing, food processing, handloom, handicrafts, services, trade, and agro-based industries. These enterprises not only support local entrepreneurship but also generate extensive employment opportunities in both rural and urban areas.
The Assam government has implemented various policies to promote entrepreneurship, streamline regulatory procedures, and facilitate access to finance for small enterprises. Initiatives such as Advantage Assam have been instrumental in attracting investments, promoting startups, expanding industries, and enhancing skill development to bolster the MSME ecosystem.
Officials noted that the increasing number of registered businesses signifies a growing formalization of enterprises and improved awareness regarding government incentives for MSMEs. The government’s emphasis on a robust MSME sector stems from its crucial role in fostering inclusive economic growth, reducing unemployment, and creating sustainable livelihoods across the state.
Anticipating a more significant contribution from the MSME sector towards Assam’s long-term economic development, the government envisions enhanced exports and the state’s positioning as a burgeoning manufacturing and business hub in the Northeast region.
