Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the opening of a new Science City near Guwahati, surpassing the size of Science City Kolkata. The facility, located in Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati, spans over 250 bighas of land and cost approximately Rs 300 crore to build.
Sarma highlighted that the Science City aims to spark scientific curiosity among students and the public through interactive learning experiences. Currently, it features attractions like ‘Eureka’ and ‘Space Odyssey’ with interactive exhibits catering to diverse age groups.
The Chief Minister revealed plans to introduce two more sections, ‘Science Innovation’ and ‘Science Park’, to enhance the educational and recreational offerings of the Science City. Additionally, a virtual reality exhibition depicting the historic victory of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan over the Mughal forces has been developed to provide visitors with an immersive experience.
Sarma emphasized the importance of making science education more engaging and accessible to students. He encouraged youth to explore the Science City’s unique exhibitions, aiming to foster interest and curiosity in scientific learning among the younger generation. The Science City is poised to become a significant educational and tourist destination in the Guwahati region, bolstering efforts to promote science education.
