Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed confidence that India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is on track to become the world’s third-largest economy. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Sarma highlighted Assam’s significant economic progress, attributing it to the Prime Minister’s Act East Policy. The state has emerged as the fastest-growing economy in India, according to recent data from the Reserve Bank of India.
Assam’s economic foundation, rooted in the hydrocarbons sector, remains robust, with advancements in green and renewable energy sectors. The state has witnessed substantial infrastructure development, enhanced connectivity with Southeast Asian markets, and investor-friendly reforms, positioning it as a key growth center in the Northeast. Sarma emphasized Assam’s appeal to global investors, portraying it as a region ripe with long-term opportunities and committed to sustainable, inclusive growth.
At the Davos summit, discussions on developing a semiconductor ecosystem in Assam gained prominence. Sarma mentioned the enthusiastic participation of private entities in advancing the semiconductor plans and expressed the state government’s eagerness to collaborate with global industry leaders. While specific agreements are pending, meetings with global semiconductor stakeholders are anticipated to propel further deliberations.
