Guwahati, Aug 19 (IANS) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced a special grant of Rs 100 crore for Cotton University, saying the investment will help transform the historic institution into a world‑class academic and modern research hub.

Sarma made the announcement in a post on social media platform X, highlighting the state government’s broader development vision as India moves towards the 80th year of Independence.

He said that from sports to infrastructure and education to heritage, Assam is moving ahead with the mantra of development and welfare for all.

He added that several initiatives were planned in the coming days to accelerate Assam’s growth journey.

The Chief Minister said the Rs 100 crore special grant would honour Cotton University’s legacy while supporting the creation of modern academic and research infrastructure. The proposed investment aims to strengthen the university’s facilities and develop it into a major centre for advanced learning and research in Assam.

Cotton University, one of the most prominent higher education institutions in the Northeast, has played a significant role in Assam’s educational and intellectual history. The government’s proposed investment seeks to combine that legacy with modern infrastructure and research capabilities.

The announcement comes as the Assam government continues to highlight education and knowledge-based development as key components of its broader growth strategy. The proposed academic and research hub is expected to provide students, faculty members and researchers with improved facilities and an environment conducive to advanced studies and innovation.

The grant is also likely to strengthen Cotton University’s capacity to undertake research in emerging areas and expand its academic footprint in the region. While the Chief Minister did not provide details of the projects to be funded under the Rs 100 crore allocation, the announcement indicates a focus on upgrading institutional infrastructure and creating modern research facilities.

The state government has been projecting a multi‑sector development agenda covering infrastructure, sports, education, heritage and other areas, aiming to support economic growth while expanding public welfare initiatives.

The detailed implementation plan for the special grant, including specific infrastructure and research projects, is expected to be worked out subsequently.

The announcement is likely to generate expectations among students, faculty and alums for a major transformation of the university’s academic and research ecosystem.
