Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that while the Constitution allows anyone to become Prime Minister, India’s historical background ensures a Hindu leader holds the position. Sarma emphasized that there is no constitutional barrier to holding the highest office in the country, but he believes that the Prime Minister will always come from a Hindu cultural framework.
Sarma’s comments align with the ideological stance often voiced by leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, which emphasizes India as a civilization state shaped by its ancient cultural and religious heritage rather than just a modern political entity. Additionally, Sarma mentioned a recent high-level review meeting to discuss arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Kaliabor in Assam on January 18.
During Modi’s visit, he is set to inaugurate the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, a significant infrastructure project costing Rs 6,957 crore. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways will oversee the project’s implementation. The elevated corridor, part of the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh stretch of NH-37, includes wildlife-friendly corridors and bypasses at Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat.
Designed in compliance with court directives and recommendations from the Wildlife Institute of India, the Kaziranga Elevated Corridor aims to enhance connectivity between Central and Upper Assam while preserving the biodiversity of Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The project is expected to be finished within 36 months and will also feature the virtual inauguration of two new Amrit Bharat Express trains, enhancing rail connectivity between Assam and northern India.
