Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized the Congress for its actions during the Emergency, accusing the Indira Gandhi-led government of undermining democracy. Sarma honored individuals who resisted the Emergency, highlighting their role in upholding democracy.
Sarma, in a social media post, praised the courage of those who stood against the Emergency, emphasizing the triumph of people’s power over authoritarianism. He also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging hypocrisy on constitutional matters.
The Chief Minister accused the Congress government of turning the country into a “jail” during the Emergency to retain power. He urged not to forget this dark chapter in history and honored the Loktantra Senanis on Samvidhan Hatya Diwas.
The BJP observes June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas to mark the Emergency declaration in 1975, considering it a dark period in India’s democratic history. The Congress, however, defends some decisions from that time while acknowledging the lessons learned from the Emergency.
