Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the significant influence of the handloom and sericulture industries in the state. He mentioned that the cultivation of Muga silk is providing sustainable livelihood opportunities and bringing about a positive transformation in rural economies across Assam.
Muga silk, renowned for its natural golden sheen and durability, is a distinctive product of Assam with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. It is produced by the semi-domesticated Muga silkworm and has deep roots in the cultural and economic heritage of the state.
The Chief Minister’s statements coincide with the state government’s ongoing endeavors to bolster the handloom and sericulture sectors through various welfare and livelihood enhancement schemes. These initiatives encompass aiding silkworm rearers, expanding host plant cultivation, providing financial support to weavers, conducting skill development programs, and facilitating better market access for traditional goods.
Efforts are being made to enhance Muga silk production while safeguarding traditional wisdom and ensuring sustainable farming practices. Industry experts believe that with increasing local and global recognition, Assam’s Muga silk industry has substantial potential to foster rural development and fortify the state’s handloom economy.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to backing artisans, weavers, and sericulture farmers, underscoring the sector’s pivotal role in preserving Assam’s cultural heritage and driving economic progress.
