Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned on Wednesday to pave the way for a new government following the BJP’s significant win. Sarma submitted his resignation letter to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at the Raj Bhavan but was asked to stay on as caretaker until the new government is formed. The oath-taking ceremony for the new government is expected to take place on May 12.
The BJP-led NDA alliance secured a clear mandate in the recent Assam Assembly elections, positioning itself for a third consecutive term in power. The formal process of government formation is anticipated to kick off after the BJP Legislature Party meeting, during which the legislative party leader will be chosen. Senior BJP leaders are likely to attend the swearing-in ceremony in Guwahati.
With a resounding victory in the Assam Assembly elections, the BJP-led NDA comfortably crossed the majority mark, ensuring Sarma’s leadership for a third term. The BJP emerged victorious with 82 out of 126 seats, while the Congress trailed with 19 seats. Regional parties like the BPF and AGP secured 10 seats each, with AIUDF and Raijor Dal winning two seats each, and AITC claiming one seat.
The BJP’s triumph sets the stage for a third consecutive term in office in Assam, solidifying its position in the northeastern state and dealing a blow to the opposition. Party members celebrated the election results across the state, attributing the victory to public trust in the BJP government’s development initiatives and governance.
