Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized the Congress, stating that the martyrs of the Assam Movement were overlooked for years despite sacrificing for Aai Asomi. He emphasized that these martyrs, who fought for Assam’s identity and rights, were not given the respect they deserved by past governments. Sarma highlighted the importance of acknowledging the historical significance of the Assam Movement and rectifying the past neglect.
The Chief Minister stressed that commemorating the Assam Movement goes beyond monuments; it is about reinstating the dignity of a pivotal chapter in Assam’s history. The inauguration of the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati signifies a milestone in officially honoring the sacrifices made by the movement’s martyrs. Sarma described the memorial as a lasting tribute from the people and the state, symbolizing gratitude.
Sarma noted the significance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying respects at the memorial, underscoring it as a moment of national recognition for Assam’s martyrs. He criticized the Congress for politicizing the Assam Movement without adequately honoring its martyrs during their tenure. Sarma’s administration has been actively working to commemorate the movement through various initiatives, including memorials, documentation, and public remembrance.
The Swahid Smarak Kshetra is envisioned as a place for future generations to grasp the values, bravery, and sacrifices that molded modern Assam. Sarma reiterated the government’s dedication to preserving Assam’s identity, drawing inspiration from the legacy of the Assam Movement’s martyrs.
