Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has introduced a massive plantation campaign named ‘Brikhya Bandhu’ across the state. The initiative involves 10 lakh students planting and nurturing one crore saplings to commemorate India’s 80th Independence Day. Scheduled from August 10 to 14, the program aims to boost environmental awareness among students and enhance the state’s green cover.
The campaign, as shared by the Chief Minister on social media, focuses on fostering environmental stewardship among students. It is set to be one of the largest student-led afforestation drives in Assam, engaging schools statewide. The students will not only plant saplings but also oversee their growth to ensure higher survival rates and promote community involvement in conservation efforts.
With a target of planting one crore saplings within five days, the initiative aligns with Assam’s broader goals of climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development. The ‘Brikhya Bandhu’ project is expected to contribute significantly to expanding green cover, restoring degraded landscapes, and reinforcing ecological balance in the state.
The state government’s emphasis on climate-conscious behavior and public participation in environmental protection is further highlighted through this initiative. By integrating environmental activities with public engagement, the program aims to instill a sense of responsibility towards nature among the younger generation. The campaign’s ambitious goal signifies a landmark green initiative in Assam’s celebrations for India’s 80th Independence Day, emphasizing sustainable development and collective commitment to nature.
