Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the new BJP-led government in the state will be formed and sworn in after May 11. Following the official declaration of Assembly poll results by the Election Commission, Sarma submitted his resignation and recommended the dissolution of the current Assam Legislative Assembly as per democratic norms. The Governor accepted these recommendations, instructing the outgoing ministry to function as a caretaker government until the new administration assumes office.
Sarma clarified that the swearing-in ceremony is expected to occur after May 11, with discussions hinting at a possible date around May 12, although not officially confirmed. He mentioned that the BJP Legislature Party will convene, with central observers J.P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini presiding over the selection of the party leader, who will then be endorsed by the NDA before claiming government formation.
The Chief Minister highlighted the procedural steps, including the invitation by the Governor to the elected leader to form the ministry, followed by decisions on the Cabinet composition. The date for the Legislature Party meeting will be disclosed soon by the BJP central leadership. The BJP-led NDA secured a significant victory in Assam, securing a comfortable majority in the 126-member Assembly.
