Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a significant figure in post-Independence Indian politics, founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, which later transformed into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Known for advocating national unity and opposing special status for Jammu and Kashmir, Mookerjee passed away on June 23, 1953, while in detention in the region.
His demise is a pivotal moment in India’s political history, commemorated annually by the BJP and its affiliated groups.
