Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to resign on Wednesday to make way for the new BJP-led government following the party’s strong win in the Assembly elections. Sarma announced that senior BJP leaders have been appointed as observers for the election of the BJP Legislative Party leader. Once the meeting of newly elected MLAs is convened as per the observers’ instructions, the swearing-in process will proceed.
After the Election Commission officially declares the final results, Sarma will submit his resignation to the Governor to ensure a smooth transition for the new government formation. The BJP-led NDA secured a significant victory in the Assam Assembly elections, securing a majority and paving the way for Sarma’s third consecutive term in office. The BJP emerged victorious with 82 out of 126 seats in the Assembly.
The Congress trailed with 19 seats, while regional parties like the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) each secured 10 seats. The AIUDF and Raijor Dal won two seats each, and the AITC secured a single seat. With this win, the BJP is poised to continue its governance in Assam for a third term, strengthening its position in the northeastern state and dealing a blow to the opposition.
The BJP’s victory was celebrated across Assam, with party members attributing it to public trust in the government’s development agenda. The swearing-in date for the new government will be announced post the formal election of the BJP Legislature Party leader.
