Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has encouraged people in the state to actively engage in the week-long Van Mahotsav festivities by planting at least one sapling. He emphasized the importance of collective public involvement in ensuring a greener and more sustainable future. The Chief Minister kickstarted the Van Mahotsav by urging citizens to use “Jan Bhagidari” to enhance the state’s green cover and protect the environment for future generations.
CM Sarma took to social media platform X to announce the commencement of #VanMahotsav, a seven-day tribute to nature. He called on every individual to plant a sapling during the week and transform the initiative into a people’s movement. Sarma emphasized leveraging the power of public participation to boost the green cover and secure a better future for children through sapling planting.
Expressing his personal dedication to environmental preservation, CM Sarma revealed that he consistently plants a sapling whenever he travels outside Guwahati on official visits. He underscored the state government’s commitment to environmental protection and afforestation, highlighting the importance of these initiatives for a sustainable future.
Van Mahotsav, an annual event observed in the first week of July, is a nationwide tree-planting campaign aimed at promoting awareness about forests, biodiversity, and ecological conservation. Various entities, including governments, educational institutions, voluntary organizations, and citizens, engage in plantation drives across the country. Assam has intensified its efforts in recent years to expand forest cover through extensive plantation projects and conservation programs.
The state has also implemented measures to safeguard its diverse biodiversity and wildlife habitats while encouraging public participation in environmental endeavors. The Chief Minister’s call to action coincides with the monsoon season, considered ideal for plantation activities due to favorable weather conditions and increased sapling survival rates.
