Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed that the BJP would show “due respect” to Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi if he decides to join the party. Sarma mentioned this after a meeting of the BJP’s election committee in New Delhi, stating that the party is open to leaders willing to enhance its organizational strength in Assam.
“If Pradyut Bordoloi joins the BJP, he will be respected, and the party may even offer him an Assembly ticket,” affirmed the Chief Minister. He emphasized the BJP’s commitment to expanding its political influence in the state. Recent developments within the Assam Congress, including Bordoloi’s discontent with the party’s operations, set the context for these statements.
Fresh internal tensions have emerged in the Assam Congress, with senior leader Pradyut Bordoloi reportedly highlighting links between a party MLA and an individual accused of attacking his convoy during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Bordoloi alleged that the MLA Asif Nazar shielded the accused, Imdadul Islam, and raised concerns about party chief Gaurav Gogoi’s association with Islam, supported by photographic evidence.
The ongoing discord within the Assam Congress has come to light as the party aims to fortify its organizational structure before the upcoming state Assembly elections. Bordoloi’s communication to the Congress leadership regarding these issues remains unanswered, indicating underlying tensions within the party leadership.
