Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed a warm welcome to former Congress leader Pradyut Bordoloi as he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Sarma criticized the Congress, stating that it no longer accommodates individuals with self-respect. He highlighted Bordoloi’s move as a significant political shift, reflecting a trend of Congress leaders switching sides.
Sarma predicted that more senior Congress leaders, including Debabrata Saikia and Ripun Bora, would also join the BJP in the near future. He emphasized that the process of Congress leaders joining the BJP has been ongoing since 2016 and is expected to intensify, with a sizable group likely to switch parties soon.
The Chief Minister clarified that Bordoloi’s decision to join the BJP was not driven by a quest for power or position. Sarma assured support for Bordoloi if he chooses to contest elections, underscoring that the former MP made a sacrifice by leaving a respectable position to align with the BJP. Bordoloi’s move is viewed as a significant blow to the Congress in Assam ahead of upcoming political contests in the state.
