Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi expressed disapproval of the seating arrangement for the Leaders of Opposition at the Republic Day parade, alleging a lack of respect for a constitutional office during a national event promoting democratic values.
Gogoi highlighted reports that Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi were placed in the third row at the Republic Day parade, contrary to the expected protocol for their positions.
He emphasized the significance of Parliament as the “temple of democracy” and questioned the treatment of the Leaders of Opposition, calling for an explanation from the Prime Minister regarding the apparent disregard for a constitutional role at a significant national occasion.
The issue escalated further as the BJP accused Rahul Gandhi of disrespecting the Northeast by not wearing a traditional patka at the Republic Day ‘At Home’ reception, a claim refuted by Congress leaders who criticized the use of cultural symbols for political attacks.
Gogoi stressed the importance of political decorum, emphasizing that cultural identity should not be exploited for partisan gains, and highlighted the need for leaders to be judged based on their actions during crises rather than symbolic gestures.
