Assam Senior Congress leader Banashree Gogoi has resigned from all positions and the primary membership of the Indian National Congress, delivering a setback to the party in the state. In her resignation letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Gogoi stated her immediate resignation from all responsibilities. She expressed gratitude for the opportunities she had while associated with the party and mentioned her intention to continue serving the people of Assam and the nation independently.
The resignation of Gogoi, who also served as National Secretary of the All India Mahila Congress, has led to political speculation in Assam following the BJP’s dominant performance in the Assembly polls. The Congress party, which only secured 19 seats, faced its worst performance in the state. Former Assam Congress President Bhupen Kumar Borah, who switched to the BJP before the elections, criticized his former party for its defeat, attributing the BJP’s success to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership and the government’s development initiatives.
The BJP-led NDA achieved a significant victory in the Assam Assembly elections, capturing 102 out of 126 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the clear winner with 82 seats, while regional parties like the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured 10 seats each. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and Raijor Dal won two seats each, and the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) secured a single seat.
