Assam Congress President and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting the posthumous award of the Bharat Ratna to the late singer-composer Zubeen Garg. Garg, known as a significant cultural figure in Assam and the Northeast, passed away recently, leaving a void in the region’s cultural landscape. Gogoi emphasized Garg’s national and international influence, transcending regional boundaries with his creative work.
Gogoi highlighted his consistent efforts to seek national recognition for Zubeen Garg, including raising the issue in Parliament and writing to the External Affairs Minister. He praised Garg’s role in promoting Assamese language, folk traditions, and contemporary music on a broader stage, contributing significantly to India’s cultural heritage. The public sentiment in Assam and the Northeast has been overwhelmingly supportive of honoring Garg with the Bharat Ratna posthumously, recognizing his lasting impact on the country’s cultural identity.
The Assam MP emphasized that conferring the Bharat Ratna on Zubeen Garg would serve as a fitting tribute to an artist whose work has become an integral part of India’s diverse cultural heritage and collective memory.
