Assam Congress MLA Nurul Huda expressed disapproval towards the BJP-led state government’s plan for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that any law affecting religious practices and personal customs would face opposition from his party. Huda mentioned that discussions within the Congress Legislature Party are imminent to determine the party’s stance on various issues, including the anticipated UCC Bill in the upcoming Assembly session.
Senior party members and observers are expected to participate in the meeting where elected MLAs will collectively deliberate on the party’s strategies within the Assembly. Huda emphasized that decisions made by the party leadership following these discussions would be unanimously supported by all members. Referring to the proposed UCC, the Congress MLA highlighted concerns about potential impacts on religious customs and traditions, emphasizing the importance of respecting diverse religious practices.
Huda rejected attempts to classify individuals based on ethnicity or language, asserting his identity as an Assamese. He emphasized the unity of Assamese people, irrespective of their backgrounds, urging acceptance based on their shared Assamese heritage. Additionally, the Congress MLA criticized the BJP government for its perceived failure in addressing rising prices and accused it of being disconnected from public concerns post-elections.
The Assam government signaled the possible introduction of the UCC Bill during the upcoming Assembly session, which commences on Thursday. This move is anticipated to spark intense debates between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over the four-day session.
