Assam Congress MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar mentioned that the Congress high command is currently in the process of choosing the leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the Assam Assembly. He anticipates an announcement regarding the Leader of the Opposition shortly. Sikdar assured that all Congress MLAs will participate together in the oath-taking ceremony and subsequent Assembly proceedings as a unified team.
The formal procedures for selecting the Congress Legislature Party leader have been initiated by the party high command. Sikdar expressed confidence that the announcement for both the Congress Legislature Party leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly will be made in a brief period. Responding to speculations about the Congress legislators sitting in the Assembly without an officially elected leader on the first day of the session, Sikdar dismissed any confusion within the party.
Sikdar emphasized that the Congress party does not consider religion or community background when selecting its leadership. He criticized rival parties for unnecessarily politicizing such matters, stating that these discussions are more common in other political parties like BJP or AIUDF, not within the Congress. The MLA highlighted that all 19 Congress legislators elected to the Assam Assembly are considered as “sons of Assam,” and the party leadership is deliberating on selecting one of them as the CLP leader.
