Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah announced immediate plans to revive the forest cover in parts of Behali Wildlife Sanctuary following reports of significant tree destruction. Satellite images revealed extensive clearing of densely forested areas over the past few months, prompting the minister to personally inspect the site. Mallabaruah emphasized the government’s commitment to reforesting the damaged areas promptly and taking strict action against those accountable.
The minister, accompanied by senior officials from various agencies, highlighted the need to conduct a thorough assessment of the destruction. Mallabaruah condemned the destruction as the work of individuals seeking personal gain and assured that the government would not tolerate such activities. He stressed that the government would initiate plantation drives to counter the damage and prevent further destruction of forests.
Addressing concerns about the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, Mallabaruah emphasized that the boundary issue should not be associated with forest destruction. He clarified that while the border dispute is being addressed through legal mechanisms, protecting forests is a separate imperative. Mallabaruah reiterated the government’s resolve to safeguard Assam’s forest resources and bring those responsible for environmental harm to justice.
