Assam’s Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, strongly denied accusations made by former AAMSU president Rejaul Karim Sarkar, rejecting claims of being a “BJP agent” or against minorities. Saikia emphasized the importance of respecting cultural identities in maintaining social harmony in regions like Dhubri and Sivasagar.
Saikia dismissed allegations of working for the BJP or the state government as absurd, highlighting his decade-long tenure in the Congress without facing any disciplinary action. Sarkar recently resigned from the Congress, citing ideological differences with the party leadership in Assam.
Responding to Sarkar’s resignation letter, Saikia clarified his stance on cultural balance and criticized the accusations of being aligned with the BJP. The controversy surrounding Sarkar’s remarks on “Greater Assam” has revealed internal divisions within the Assam Congress.
