Assam Police has achieved a milestone by becoming the first police force in the Northeast and the third in the country to be recognized as an Offline Verification Seeking Entity (OVSE) by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). This registration aims to enhance identity verification, especially in areas of Assam with limited internet access. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed this move as a significant stride towards improving the efficiency, security, and user-friendliness of policing.
The OVSE registration empowers Assam Police personnel to verify an individual’s identity instantly by scanning the secure QR code on Aadhaar cards, even without an internet connection. This feature is expected to be particularly beneficial in remote and geographically challenging regions of Assam, such as hill districts, border villages, and areas with unreliable internet connectivity. The offline verification system utilizes the Aadhaar QR code, which contains a digitally signed and tamper-proof security seal issued by UIDAI, making it harder for individuals with forged or photocopied Aadhaar cards to deceive law enforcement agencies during verification processes.
This technological advancement will not only bolster security measures but also enhance the efficiency of routine police services. Processes like tenant verification, character certificate verification, passport police verification, and arms license verification are anticipated to become quicker and more streamlined through offline Aadhaar authentication. By reducing delays caused by poor connectivity and curbing the use of fraudulent identity documents during police verifications, this new system is poised to make a significant impact.
Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the broader implications of Assam Police’s registration as an OVSE, highlighting the state’s commitment to embracing technology-driven governance and modern policing practices. The state government has been actively pursuing digital initiatives to enhance public service delivery, law enforcement, and administrative effectiveness. With this recent registration under UIDAI, Assam Police joins a select group of police organizations in the country authorized to conduct secure offline Aadhaar verification, a move that is expected to strengthen identity authentication and enhance the accessibility and efficiency of police services for citizens across the state.
