At Nungshang Kong in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, two Assam Rifles personnel were killed in an ambush by a suspected Naga armed group. The incident occurred when the Assam Rifles patrol party was attacked by unidentified Naga armed assailants near Nungshang Kong Bridge. The attack resulted in critical injuries to the personnel, who later succumbed to their wounds.
Senior officials reported that an intermittent exchange of fire persisted in the area for hours, hindering the arrival of a police team from Ukhrul Police Station. Due to the ongoing gunfire and explosions, details such as the total casualties and the attackers’ identity remained unconfirmed.
Local villagers witnessed heavy gunfire and explosions for nearly two hours, causing panic in the surrounding villages. Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh strongly condemned the attack, promising decisive action against the perpetrators.
The Manipur government expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the Assam Rifles personnel and denounced the ambush as a barbaric act. Chief Minister Singh assured that those responsible for the attack would be apprehended and punished as per the law.
