The Assam State Election Commission has officially started the electoral process for the upcoming elections of the Silchar Municipal Corporation. This move comes almost two years after the transformation of the 142-year-old Silchar Municipal Board into a Municipal Corporation. State Election Commissioner Ranjan Sharma issued a notification outlining the schedule for ward-wise preparation and publication of electoral rolls for the Corporation’s 42 wards.
The electoral roll preparation activities are set to take place from June 12 to June 18, with updates scheduled between June 19 and June 28. Draft electoral rolls will be made public on June 29, followed by a period for filing claims and objections until July 6. The final electoral rolls are expected to be published on July 15 after the disposal of claims and objections on July 13.
The establishment of the Silchar Municipal Corporation under the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022, with 42 wards, was a decision made by the state government. This move signifies a significant milestone in the civic evolution of Silchar, transitioning from a Municipal Board to a Municipal Corporation in June 2024. The upgraded civic body is anticipated to bring in more financial resources and expedite infrastructure development, with a focus on enhancing basic urban services like safe drinking water, efficient drainage systems, and improved waste management.
