Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed plans for doorstep delivery of foodgrains through the public distribution system (PDS) for elderly and specially abled individuals who struggle to collect their monthly rations. This initiative, shared on social media, aims to ensure that no eligible beneficiary faces food insecurity due to age or mobility challenges. The state government, led by CM Sarma, intends to extend the “Anna Sewa” program to reach deserving families directly at their homes, highlighting a commitment to inclusive service.
The announcement involves tagging the Assam Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai, signaling the department’s role in executing the new service. This move aligns with Assam’s broader strategy to enhance welfare schemes and enhance access to vital services for vulnerable groups. The doorstep ration delivery initiative targets elderly individuals living independently, those with severe physical limitations, and other qualified recipients who encounter difficulties in accessing their monthly food quota from fair price shops.
By leveraging technology-driven governance, Assam aims to expand welfare measures and beneficiary-focused programs to ensure the efficient operation of social security and food distribution schemes. This proposed program is anticipated to alleviate challenges for numerous eligible beneficiaries in both rural and urban settings by facilitating the direct delivery of subsidized foodgrains to their doorsteps. The state’s commitment to timely distribution of subsidised foodgrains under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) underscores its dedication to supporting eligible households through the public distribution system.
The initiative positions Assam among states adopting doorstep delivery mechanisms to enhance the accessibility of welfare schemes, particularly for elderly and disabled individuals. This move underscores the government’s emphasis on inclusive governance and food security, reflecting a broader commitment to ensuring the well-being of all citizens through efficient service delivery.
