Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed plans for a significant event in Dibrugarh’s legislative history, as the foundation stone for Assam’s second Legislative Assembly complex is scheduled to be laid on January 30. The Chief Minister shared on social media that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the project, aiming to enhance governance and foster development in Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital. This move is part of a broader strategy to decentralize administration and bring governance closer to the people of Upper Assam.
The proposed Legislative Assembly complex in Dibrugarh is expected to promote balanced regional development and improve administrative efficiency, according to Sarma. By establishing a second Assembly complex, the government aims to support inclusive growth and recognize Dibrugarh’s growing significance as a political, economic, and cultural center in the region. This initiative is set to elevate the city’s strategic importance and transform it into a key administrative hub.
Sarma highlighted the importance of the new Assembly complex in facilitating legislative proceedings beyond Dispur and addressing regional aspirations by establishing a stronger institutional presence in Upper Assam. The project is anticipated to enhance democratic processes by fostering better engagement between elected representatives and the public. It aligns with the state’s development agenda, focusing on infrastructure expansion, urban development, and improved connectivity in Upper Assam, as per the Chief Minister.
The establishment of the Assembly complex is projected to stimulate economic activity, create job opportunities, and boost various sectors in Dibrugarh and neighboring areas. Sarma expressed confidence that the foundation stone laying ceremony by the Union Home Minister will signify the commencement of a new phase in Assam’s administrative journey. The government’s commitment to developing Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital, ensuring responsive governance and equitable development statewide, remains steadfast.
